2017 | 2018 Gubernatorial Elections Map
38 Governor Seats to be contested
Virginia and New Jersey elected Democratic governors on November 7th. These now default to Safe Democrat on the interactive map. 2018 will see 36 more races. While most visitors to our site focus on Congress, these gubernatorial races have national implications with the next Census coming in 2020. In most states, the legislature redraws congressional districts, while the governor has veto power.
Republicans currently hold 34 governorships, tying a historic high previously set nearly a century ago. This will drop to 33 when Phil Murphy takes over in New Jersey in January.
