The nation’s governorships are nearly evenly split between the two parties, with 26 Republicans and 24 Democrats holding office. Three states - Kentucky, Louisiana, and Mississippi - will hold gubernatorial elections in 2023. Another 11 states follow in 2024. The table below the map lists the current governors of all 50 states, tabbed by the next election year.
This map is a composite of ratings by several forecasters. Only seats rated safe by all are shown as 'safe' for the incumbent party.
July 19: New Hampshire moves from Likely Republican to toss-up after Gov. Chris Sununu passes on running for reelection. (Note that some forecasters have not yet updated their rating for the race, but this is where we expect it to settle.)
