On July 1, New York City Board of Elections will conduct a preliminary ranked choice tabulation. The results are expected to be released around noon, Eastern Time.
This will take place for contests where no candidate received a majority of the vote in the June 24 primary.
Voters that day had the option to rank up to five candidates in order of preference.
The ranked choice process starts by eliminating the candidate with the fewest first-choice votes. It reallocates the votes for that person to the remaining candidates based on the next preference.
The process is repeated until one candidate receives a majority of the available votes.
Here's how the tabulation played out in the 2021 Democratic mayoral primary won by Eric Adams.1 1For those looking closely, you'll notice a couple rounds where multiple candidates were removed. This 'batch elimination' is allowed where the combined vote total for these candidates is less than the candidate immediately ahead of them. Put another way, it is mathematically impossible for the eliminated candidates to catch the candidate with the lowest vote total advancing to the next round.
The ranked choice tables on this page will provide results for the final round, where the winner is determined. We've also included the results table from June 24.
Mayor
State Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani is the presumptive nominee heading into this tabulation. He received nearly 44% of first choice votes on June 24. Former Gov. Andrew Cuomo finished second with 36%.
While Cuomo has conceded the Democratic nomination, he isn't going away. Having separately qualified for the "Fight and Deliver" ballot line, he will be on the general election ballot in November.
Comptroller
At 48% of the vote, Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine finished just short of a majority. City Councilman Justin Brannan was second at just under 34%.
Brannan has conceded the nomination to Levine.
Manhattan Borough President
State Sen. Brad Hoylman-Sigal finished with nearly 49%, just falling short of an outright win. City Councilman Keith Powers was second with 38%.
City Council District 2
Harvey Epstein finished first with 39% of the vote. Sarah Batchu and Andrea Gordillo both finished at 21%, separated by just 30 first choice votes. Epstein, a State Assemblyman, appears likely to win the nomination.
Primary voters were not impressed with Anthony Weiner's attempted return to elected office. He finished well back in fourth place with about 10%.
The Board will update the ranked choice tabulation each Tuesday until the election results are certified. However, it is unlikely the results will vary much from this initial calculation.
