Live Results May 13: Omaha Mayor; Legislative Special Elections

On Tuesday, residents of Omaha will elect a mayor. There are also a number of legislative special elections.

Mayoral Election

Omaha

Nebraska's largest city is the 40th largest in the United States, with a population of about 483,000.1 1Population rankings are based on July 1, 2023 Census Bureau population estimates. They are for the city itself, not the associated metropolitan area.

Mayor Jean Stothert is seeking a record 4th term in office. 

Stothert and John Ewing Jr. advanced from the April 1 primary. Stothert had 37% of the vote in the field of five candidates, while John Ewing Jr. finished closely behind at 33%.

While the contest is officially nonpartisan, Stothert is a Republican, Ewing a Democrat.

Polls close at 9:00 PM Eastern Time.  

State Senate Special Election

Oklahoma District 8

Republicans hold an overwhelming 39-8 advantage over Democrats in the Oklahoma State Senate. There is one vacancy. Members serve four-year staggered terms; the even-numbered districts are up for election in 2026.

District 8 encompasses a largely rural area in the east central part of the state. Republican Roger Thompson resigned in November. Thompson was unopposed for reelection in 2022.

Republican Bryan Logan won the nomination via a primary runoff on April 1. Nathan Brewer was unopposed for the Democratic nomination. They are joined on the ballot by independent Steve Sanford.

State House Special Elections

Alabama District 11 (Primary)

Republicans hold a large 74-29 majority over Democrats in the Alabama House of Representatives. There are two vacancies. Members serve four-year terms; the next elections are in 2026.

District 11, in the northcentral part of the state, became vacant in February when Republican Randall Shedd resigned. Shedd was unopposed for reelection in 2022. 

Two Republicans are vying to succeed Shedd. The winner will meet Democratic nominee Alexandria Braswell in the August 26 special general election.

Massachusetts District 6th Essex

Democrats hold a large 132-25 supermajority in the Massachusetts House of Representatives. There are two vacancies. Members serve two-year terms; the next regular elections are in 2026.

Democrat Jerry Parisella resigned from District 6th Essex at the beginning of the year. He won reelection in November by a 71% to 24% margin over his GOP challenger.

Hannah Bowen advanced from the April 15 primary; she meets Republican Medley Long to fill the seat.

Polls close at 8:00 PM Eastern Time.

Oklahoma Districts 71 and 74 (Primary Runoffs)

Republicans have an 80-18 supermajority over Democrats in the Oklahoma House of Representatives. There are three vacancies. Members serve two-year terms; the next elections are in 2026.

The special general election for both these open seats is June 10. 

Polls close at 8:00 PM Eastern Time.

District 71: Democrat Amanda Swope resigned in January.  Swope was unopposed in 2024. In 2022, she defeated her Republican opponent by a 61% to 39% margin.

In the April 1 party primaries, Amanda Clinton won the Democratic nomination. On the GOP side, no candidate got a majority of the vote, necessitating a runoff. Beverly Atteberry came close, with just under 49% of the vote. Tania Garza was second with 29%. 

District 74: The Republican primary here also requires a runoff. On April 1, Sheila Vancuren finished first with 28% of the vote; Kevin Norwood had 21%.

Sheila Vancuren is the wife of the prior incumbent Mark Vancuren. He resigned at the end of 2024. Vancuren defeated an independent challenger by a 76% to 24% margin in 2024.

The Democratic nominee is Amy Hossain.
