New Jersey and Virginia are the only states with gubernatorial and legislative elections in 2025. New Jersey held its primary last Tuesday.
Virginia Primary Overview and Results
This year, there are elections for statewide offices and the House of Delegates. The general election is November 4.
Polls close at 7:00 PM Eastern Time.
Statewide Offices
Governor
Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin is ineligible to run. Virginia is the only state where governors cannot serve consecutive terms.
While open races - especially competitive ones - can draw crowded primary fields, that is not the case here. The general election is set, as only one candidate from each party ultimately qualified. Lt. Gov Winsome Earle-Sears (R) will meet Rep. Abigail Spanberger (VA-07) in November. The winner will become the state's first female governor.
Lieutenant Governor
This office is elected separately from governor. Interestingly, the one-term limit does not apply. However, with Lt. Gov. Earle-Sears running for governor, the seat is open.
The Republican nominee is John Reid, a radio talk host. His opponent earlier in the campaign, Fairfax County Supervisor Pat Herrity withdrew in April for health reasons. Shortly after that, Reid was the subject of a short-lived controversy involving Gov. Youngkin.
Six Democrats are on the primary ballot. There hasn't been any independent polling of the race. Based on fundraising and endorsements, the best-positioned candidates appear to be:
- Ghazala Hashmi, State Senator
- Aaron Rouse, State Senator
- Levar Stoney, former Richmond Mayor
Attorney General
Republican Jason Miyares is seeking a second term. He drew no primary challengers.
Former State Delegate Jay Jones and Henrico County Commonwealth's Attorney Shannon Taylor will vie for the Democratic nomination.
General Assembly
State Senate
There are 40 Senate districts in Virginia. The chamber is closely-divided; Democrats hold a 21-19 partisan advantage. The next regular elections, for a four-year term, are in 2027.
House of Delegates
Democrats hold a narrow 51-49 edge in the House of Delegates. Control of the chamber has flipped with each of the last three elections (2019, 2021, and 2023).
