Republican Richard Nixon won the 1968 presidential election, reversing the Democratic electoral landslide of 1964. This was also the last election where a 3rd party candidate won the popular vote of any state. 9 states that voted Republican that year have been solidly red since. (Why is Nebraska striped?)
