Election Recap June 3, 2025: Dems Hold State House Seat in South Carolina

A brief recap of the special election held June 3, 2025.

Before we get to that, an update on Virginia's 11th congressional district, vacated upon the death of Gerry Connolly (D) last month. Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) has scheduled a special election for September 9. Numerous candidates - at least 12 in total - have entered the race. Parties must select their nominees by July 11.

South Carolina State House District 50

Keishan Scott easily won this special election over Republican William Oden. Democrats hold the seat; Scott will succeed Will Wheeler who resigned in January.

With the caveat that we shouldn't read too much into special elections with light turnouts, Scott's 41% margin of victory marked a sharp reversal from the 2024 presidential election, when Donald Trump fell only 5% short of Kamala Harris in the district.

The 24-year-old Scott is the youngest person elected to the Legislature since 2016.

Next Elections are June 3 and 7

June 7: San Antonio and Garland Mayoral Runoffs

No candidates received a majority of the vote on May 3. The top two finishers advanced to a runoff.

June 10: New Jersey Primary and Legislative Special Elections

New Jersey is one of only two states (Virginia) with gubernatorial and legislative elections in 2025. Voters in the Garden State will choose nominees.

There are also six legislative special elections and one special primary across three states.
