Overview & Live Results: St. Louis, Anchorage Mayoral Races Highlight Eight April 6 Elections

April 6, 2021

April 6 is headlined by 2 mayoral general elections. There are also 4 legislative general elections and two primaries.  Live results will appear after the polls close in each location.

Mayoral General Elections

City rankings are based on July 1, 2019 Census Bureau population estimates. They are for the city itself, not the associated metropolitan area.

St. Louis, Missouri

St. Louis is the 65th largest city in the United States, with a population of about 300,000. The current mayor is Democrat Lyda Krewson. She was elected with about 68% of the vote in 2017. Republican Andrew Jones was second with 17%. Krewson is not seeking a second term.

In a change approved by St. Louis voters, a single nonpartisan primary determined the nominees (vs. partisan primaries in 2017). The top two finishers based on approval percentage advanced. They are St. Louis City Treasurer Tishaura Jones and Alderwoman Cara Spencer.

This election is officially nonpartisan (NPA). However, both Jones and Spencer are Democrats. This suggests the outcome will be much closer than in 2017.

Polls close at 8:00 PM Eastern Time (ET).

Anchorage, Alaska

Anchorage is the 69th largest city in the United States, with a population of about 288,000. The acting mayor is independent Austin Quinn-Davidson. She was appointed by the Assembly after the elected mayor, Ethan Berkowitz (D) resigned in October of 2020.

Quinn-Davidson is not seeking a full term.

Anchorage mayors serve three-year terms. If no candidate gets 45% of the vote - which seems likely with such a large field - the top two finishers will move on to a May 11 runoff.

This election is officially nonpartisan (NPA). In terms of the more prominent candidates on the ballot, Forrest Dunbar is a Democrat, while David Bronson and Mike Robbins are Republican. Bill Evans and George Martinez are independents. The affiliation of Bill Falsey is unknown.

This is a vote-by-mail election, with an option to return the ballot via drop box. The deadline is 8:00 PM local time (midnight ET).

Mayoral Primary

Omaha, Nebraska

Omaha is the 40th largest U.S. city, with a population of 478,000.  The mayor is Republican Jean Stothert. She is seeking a third four-year term.

This is a nonpartisan all-party primary, although the four other candidates on the ballot are all Democrats. The top two finishers will advance to the general election on May 11.

Polls close at 9:00 PM ET.

Legislative Special General Elections

Missouri State House District 45

There are 163 State House districts in Alabama. Currently, the chamber has 114 Republicans and 48 Democrats. The next regularly scheduled election is in 2022.

The District 45 special general election will fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Democrat Kip Kendrick in November. Kendrick announced his departure just days after winning reelection unopposed

The election pits Democrat David Smith against Libertarian Glenn Nielson. It is the first time someone other than a Democrat has contested the seat since 2016.

Polls close at 8:00 PM ET.

Oklahoma State Senate District 22

The Oklahoma State Senate has 38 Republicans and 9 Democrats. The next regularly scheduled election is in 2022.  The District 22 special election will fill the vacancy created after Republican Stephanie Bice was elected to Congress (OK-5). She resigned at the end of 2020.

Bice won a 2nd term with about 73% of the vote in 2018.

The nominees are Republican Jake Merrick and Democrat Molly Ooten. Polls close at 8:00 PM ET.

Wisconsin State Assembly District 89

The 99 person Wisconsin Assembly has 60 Republicans and 38 Democrats. The next regularly scheduled election is in 2022. The District 80 special election will fill the vacancy created when Republican John Nygren resigned in December, 2020.  This was one month after he had won reelection with 69% of the vote.

The nominees are Republican Elijah Behnke and Democrat Karl Jaeger. Polls close at 9:00 PM ET.

Wisconsin State Senate District 13

The Wisconsin State Senate has 22 Republicans and 10 Democrats. The next regularly scheduled election is in 2022. The District 13 special election will fill the vacancy created after Republican Scott Fitzgerald was elected to Congress (WI-5). He resigned on January 1.

Fitzgerald was reelected with 59% of the vote in 2018.

The major party nominees are Republican John Jagler and Democrat Melissa Winkler. Polls close at 9:00 PM ET.

Legislative Special Primary

California State Assembly District 79

The 80 person California Assembly has 59 Democrats, 19 Republicans and 1 independent. The next regularly scheduled election is in 2022. The District 79 special election will fill the vacancy created when Shirley Weber resigned after being confirmed as California Secretary of State in January. That position opened up after Alex Padilla was appointed to fill Vice-President Kamala Harris' Senate seat.

Weber was reelected with 65% of the vote in 2020.

As is typically the case in California, there is a single primary ballot featuring all candidates from all parties. Because it is a special election, if one candidate receives a majority of the vote, they are the winner. Otherwise, the top two finishers will advance to the June 8 general election.  Four Democrats are on the ballot, including Akilah Weber, daughter of the former incumbent. They are joined by Republican Marco Contreras.

Polls close at 11:00 PM ET.
