Republicans hold a 48-46 edge in the Virginia House of Delegates. There are six vacant seats, four of which were most recently held by Republicans, two by Democrats. Combining those two numbers gives the GOP a 52-48 edge, matching their margin after the 2021 election, when they gained control of the chamber by flipping seven seats. 

Members serve two-year terms.

As a result of redistricting delays, these elections will be the first held using new boundaries created as a result of the 2020 Census. This has led to a larger than normal turnover, even before the general election ballots are cast. 17 incumbents did not seek reelection, while one lost in a primary. 14 others ran for a promotion to the State Senate; 10 of those successfully advanced to the general election.

Polls close at 7:00 PM Eastern Time.

Competitive Races

Barring any major surprises, Democrats will win at least 46 seats: 18 uncontested and 28 rated safe. Republicans will win at least 40: 14 uncontested and 26 rated safe. 

The remaining 14 seats will determine which party emerges with control. If the chamber ends 50-50, the parties will need to determine some sort of power-sharing arrangement.

Incumbent is defined here as a sitting Delegate on the ballot in that district. Due to redistricting, they may currently represent a district with a different number and geography.
