On Tuesday, one congressional vacancy will be filled. There are also a number of state legislative special elections.

Poll closings shown in Eastern Time (ET).

U.S. House of Representatives

Rhode Island Congressional District 1

Rep. David Cicilline resigned in May to head up a nonprofit foundation. In 2022, Cicilline was elected to a 7th term by a 64% to 36% margin.  The state's two districts are divided east-west. District 1 includes the eastern part, and is the more safely Democratic of the two.

Former White House aide Gabriel Amo defeated ten others to win the Democratic nomination. Gerry Leonard Jr., a 30 year Marine veteran, is the GOP nominee. The two faced off in a debate on November 2

The only public poll of this race, conducted in mid-October, showed Amo with a 46% to 35% lead.

Polls close at 8:00 PM ET.

State Legislative (General)

There are 7,386 seats in state legislatures across the 50 states. With that large a number, there are almost always vacancies that arise due to resignation or death. Special elections are held through the year; the ones below are taking place on Election Day itself. That timing could increase turnout, especially in those places where there are other high profile races or proposals on the ballot.
