Live Results: Texas Mayoral and Louisiana State House Special Elections

Voters in several Texas cities will elect a mayor on Saturday. Across the Sabine River, there will be a special primary for a vacant State House seat in Louisiana.

Texas

Four Texas cities that are among the nation's 100 most populous will elect a mayor on Saturday. Population rankings are based on July 1, 2023 Census Bureau population estimates. They are for the city itself, not the associated metropolitan area.

These mayoral elections are all officially nonpartisan. However, we include the party affiliation of the incumbent in the city info table.

A majority vote is required to win. Otherwise the top two finishers will advance to a June runoff.  Polls close at 8:00 PM Eastern Time.

San Antonio

Rank Population Mayor Terms Status
7 1,495,295 Ron Nirenberg (D) 4 Term-Limited

Voters passed Proposition F last November which, changed the mayoral term length from two to four years, beginning with this election. It also adjusted the term-limits rule from four two-year terms to two four-year terms.

Mayor Ron Nirenberg is completing his fourth term, and is thus ineligible to run. 27 candidates (!) are on the ballot to succeed him.

In a recent poll by UT San Antonio, 45% of voters were still undecided. Only three candidates had over 5% support: Gina Ortiz Jones (13%), John Courage (7%) and Beto Altamirano (6%). Six others had between 3% and 5% in the survey.

A top-two runoff is all but certain here.

Fort Worth

Rank Population Mayor Terms Status
12 978,468 Mattie Parker (R) 2 Running

Mayor Mattie Parker is seeking a third two-year term.  She won the office in a 2021 runoff, and was easily reelected with nearly 70% of the vote in 2023.

Parker has drawn seven challengers, although none of them appear to have the name recognition or resources to win.

Plano

Rank Population Mayor Terms Status
73 290,190 John Muns (R) 1 Running

Muns is unopposed for reelection to a second four-year term.

Garland

Rank Population Mayor Terms Status
94 243,470 Scott LeMay (R) 3 Term-Limited

Mayor Scott LeMay is ineligible to run after serving three two-year terms. Six people are looking to succeed him.

Louisiana

Republicans dominate the Louisiana House of Representatives, holding 73 seats to 31 for Democrats. There is one vacancy. Members serve four-year terms; the next regular elections are in 2027.

District 67

Democrat Larry Selders resigned from District 67 after winning a State Senate special election earlier this year. Selders was unopposed for reelection in 2023.

This Baton Rouge district is heavily Democratic; no Republican has contested it since 2011. That streak will continue in this special election, which features three Democrats on the ballot. While this is technically a primary, if one candidate gets a majority, they are elected. Otherwise, the top two will move to the June 7 special general election.

Polls close at 9:00 PM Eastern Time.
