Electoral College Meets Tuesday

All times in this article are Eastern.

On Tuesday the Electoral College meets to cast votes for president and vice president. While largely ceremonial, it is an important part of the process that culminates with the presidential inauguration on January 20

The certified slate of electors from each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia will convene in their individual states. The meetings occur throughout the day, beginning at 9:00 AM in Maryland, and continuing through 7:00 PM in Hawaii.

Visit the following page to see the meeting time in each state, as well as a link to a livestream (where available):

There is also an electoral map on that page that we will populate as the day goes on. Assuming no faithless electors, the official electoral vote will match the projected result after Election Day, a 312-226 win for Donald Trump.

After each state's electors cast their vote, they will individually sign six Certificates of Vote. These are transmitted - along with a Certificate of Ascertainment to various places. One of those copies goes to the vice president, who is also the president of the U.S. Senate. Acting in that latter role, Kamala Harris will preside over a joint session of Congress on January 6, where the electoral votes are officially counted.

That count will confirm her loss to Donald Trump. The last time a sitting vice president lost as presidential nominee was in 2000, when Al Gore lost to George W. Bush.
