Republican Sen. John Thune is the strong favorite to win a 4th term.
Republican Sen. Kristi Noem is seeking a 2nd term. She is being challenged by Democrat Jamie Smith, the Minority Leader of the State House of Representatives. An early October poll showed Noem with just a four-point lead, although a more recent survey from Emerson College put her up by 19 points.
South Dakota is one of six states with a single at-large district. Republican Dusty Johnson is seeking a third term. Libertarian Collin Duprel is his sole challenger as no Democrats entered the race.
Republicans have an overwhelming 32-3 advantage over Democrats in the South Dakota State Senate. Members serve two-year terms.
Republican dominance in the South Dakota House of Representatives is only slightly less than in the State Senate. In this chamber, the party controls 62 of 70 seats. Members serve two-year terms.
