Special Elections

Although they won't get as much attention, there are several special elections being held on the same day as the 2022 midterms.

U.S. Senate

Democratic Sen. Alex Padilla was appointed on an interim basis to take over for Kamala Harris after she resigned to become vice president in January, 2021. In this case, 'interim' was for all but the final two months of the term. The winner of this special election - expected to be Padilla - will complete the term.

Padilla and Republican Mark Meuser are also on the ballot for the regular election to a six-year term. Polls close at 11:00 PM Eastern Time (ET).

U.S. House

This special election is to complete the term of Republican Jackie Walorski, who died in August. The same three candidates are also on the ballot for the regular election for a two-year term. Note that the special election is taking place under the current district boundaries, while the regular election will use redistricted boundaries.

The boundaries didn't shift all that much and Republican Rudy Yakym is expected to be the next representative. Polls close at 6:00 PM ET.

State Legislative

There are 11 state legislative special elections.

Kansas State Senate District 38

Republican Ronald Ryckman is serving on an interim basis. The winner will serve until the state's next regularly scheduled elections in 2024. Polls close at 8:00 PM ET.

Louisiana State Senate Districts 5 and 17

Winners will serve until the state's next regularly scheduled elections in 2023. In District 17, if no candidate gets a majority, the top two finishers will have a December 10 general election runoff. Polls close at 9:00 PM ET.

Mississippi State House District 37

The winner will serve until the state's next regularly scheduled elections in 2023. Polls close at 8:00 PM ET.

Montana State Senate Districts 15 and 39

Incumbents are serving on an interim basis. In District 15, Republican Dan Bartel is on the ballot, while in District 39, Democrat Jessica Wicks is not. Winners will serve until the next regularly scheduled election for these districts, which is in 2024. Polls close at 10:00 PM ET.

Nebraska State Senate District 31

Nebraska is the only state with a unicameral (single body) legislature. While elections are nonpartisan, party affiliations are known. Republican Kathleen Kauth is serving on an interim basis. The winner will serve until the next regularly scheduled election for this district, which is in 2024. Her opponent, Tim Royers is a Democrat. Polls close at 9:00 PM ET.

New Jersey General Assembly District 12 and State Senate District 28

Incumbents are serving on an interim basis. The winners will serve until the state's next regularly scheduled elections in 2023. Polls close at 8:00 PM ET.
