Live Results: Georgia State House Special Election

We're following one legislative special election this week.

Georgia State House District 139

Republicans hold a 101-78 edge over Democrats in the Georgia House of Representatives. There is one vacancy, to be filled via this special election.

Members serve two year terms; the next regular elections are in November.

District 139 is in the Columbus area. Republican Richard Smith passed away in late January. He had served in the House since 2004, and was unopposed for reelection in 2022.

Under Georgia special election law, all candidates from all parties are on the special election ballot. There are three Republicans and an independent vying for the seat; no Democrats opted to run.

If nobody gets a majority of the vote, the top two finishers will meet in a May 7 runoff.

Polls close at 7:00 PM Eastern Time.

Regardless of the outcome, the same three Republicans will meet again in the May 21 party primary for a regular two-year term to be contested in the November general election. Carl Sprayberry is unopposed for the Democratic nomination.
