Interesting Polls Today: Race Tightening or Outliers?

October 30th, 2008   ·   18 Comments   ·     ·   URI

On the same day we moved Colorado to leaning Obama, a couple polls caught our eye.  In Pennsylvania, Mason-Dixon shows an Obama lead of just 4 points.  Likewise, Obama has a 4 point lead in Virginia according to Marist.  These polls are significantly different than other recent polls in those states (especially the PA poll), [...]

Montana and North Dakota Moved to Swing States

October 29th, 2008   ·   8 Comments   ·     ·   URI

There’s been very limited polling from these two states, but what we have seen lately leads us to believe that they should be considered toss-ups.   If Obama were to win these historically very red states, he would (most likely) win every state in the continental U.S. bordering Canada, except for Idaho, which shares 45 miles [...]

Virginia Moved to Obama

October 20th, 2008   ·   29 Comments   ·     ·   URI

Today, we moved Virginia into the Obama category.     We’ve been dragging our feet a little on this move, but with yet another poll (Rasmussen) out today showing a 10 point Obama lead, we really can’t hold back any longer.
Why have we waited?  A combination of reasons.  This move puts Obama above 270 on the map.  [...]

8 States Remain in Play as of Today’s Polls

October 7th, 2008   ·   28 Comments   ·     ·   URI

We’ve moved New Hampshire from toss-up to Obama today, as several recent polls show him with a 10+ point lead.   As of today, we show Obama with 264 EV and McCain with 163 EV.  This is based on states that are >5 point spread based on a composite of recent polls.
As of today (and we [...]

About this Site
270towin.com is an interactive Electoral College map for 2012 and a history of Presidential elections in the United States. Since electoral votes are generally allocated on an "all or none" basis by state, the election of a U.S President is about winning the popular vote in enough states to achieve 270 electoral votes, a majority of the 538 that are available. It is not about getting the most overall popular votes, as we saw in the 2000 election, when the electoral vote winner (Bush) and the popular vote winner (Gore) were different.
