California Democratic Rep. Tony Cárdenas Not Seeking Reelection

Rep. Tony Cárdenas (CA-29) will not run for a 7th term in 2024, he told The Los Angeles Times. His retirement opens up a safely blue seat in the San Fernando Valley, northwest of downtown Los Angeles.

Cárdenas won his final term in 2022 by a 17% margin over fellow Democrat Angélica Dueñas. District 29 was one of six U.S. House districts that year where only Democrats advanced from California's top-two primary.

This is the 10th congressional retirement in November, tied for the most in a single month since at least 2011.1 1This includes one U.S. Senate retirement, Joe Manchin of West Virginia. Politico's Steven Shepard had a good article the other day on the impact of all these retirements on 2024 elections.  

Overall, 18 Democrats and 10 Republicans have announced they are retiring or seeking another office next year.
